chapters 13 & 14

Gawaine sends a letter to Lancelot explaining what has happening in England and tells him that his wound is so bad and he dies. Lancelot wants to help save the queen and help Arthur defeat Mordred. Arthur reflects back on his ruling and all the things he tried to make work, but how they always failed. He feels bad because chivalry and what he wanted and stood for was almost impossible. There were so many feuds and grudges from ancestors that nobody can forgive and forget and it causes so many problems.Arthur calls for a page named Tom. He asks him to take a letter to the bishop then tells him to come back while he tells him a story. He talks about fighting and how he was so happy for the round table but it wasn't all good.He wants he page to live to tell the story. He dreams and thinks about Merlyn and the lessons. He believes that there will sometime be a new round table where life is better and nations get a long.

Reflections
I believe King Arthur didn't have a choice in prosecuting the people he loved he was all about fairness and what is right. He was the role model for what he wanted and if he changed it now all his work would have been for nothing.

I believe the fall of Camelot was due to Arthur and might. He wanted everything to be so nice and have chivalry. I think he took things to fast and tried to make man perfect and fair when life doesn't work that way. Even though Arthur had good intentions they didn't work out the best.

I think after reading the book Arthur is my favorite character because he has to rule all of England and he wants to do what is best. He is the one who reflects the most about all that he has done and all the lessons he learned which is really important. Guenever i felt bad for because she was in love with someone she couldn't be with but it was right of her to go back to the king. Lancelot i didn't like to well because he was the best knight so all he did was fight and kill. He also was to obsessed with the queen and he should of let her deal with her own problems instead of always saving her.

In the end of the book i thought it was neat that Thomas Malory was the page. The ending to me is hopeful because Arthur stays positive and dreams of a day when the world is in peace. The bad thing about that is there will always be grudges from history because people don't always forgive and forget, so it is depressing to know that our world will never all be in peace and get along.

The ILL-Made knight

Chapters 1-4
It starts to talk about the conversation King Arthur had with Lancelot. He said he watched Lancelot play games and would like for him to be apart of his round table of knights who fight for justice not strength. Lancelot has a dream about being tied up and forced to ride a donkey. When he comes to a well he goes to drink it but it sinks away from him. He is described as very ugly and ape looking. Lancelot later becomes King Arthur's best knight. There is a description of the armoury and how there is fighting equipment and barrels for the knights. T. H White compares things in the armoury to today. for example certain pads the knights wear would be like football pads that professionals use. Lancelot was to stay there for three years training and learning how to be a knight. After the first year he could be promoted to pel quintain (fighting against a stake in the ground). Then his last stage he would be allowed to have combat with his brothers or cousins having very strict rules. Knights get compared to divers because of the heavy equipment and having to learn about the force of gravity. Lancelot loves the idea that Arthur has because he wants Arthur to love him and he also wants to be able to make a miracle happen. Uncle Dap is the only one who is taking Lancelot serious. Merlyn goes to speak to Lancelot and tells him he will be the greatest knight and he will get his true love in thirty years. He also asks Lancelot to be part of the 150 knights of the round table. Lancelot decides to go to England and him and his Uncle Dap sale the English channel. The battle goes on and Sir Lancelot and King Arthur kill a lot of enemies and perform great battles. They realize that the queen shall not come between them. The king and queen kiss while Lancelot is there and he believes that she would come between them so he asks to leave. Sir Lancelot asks the king if he can go on a quest. Sir Carados and Sir Tarquine were two Celts who believed in having ruling by force and no system of government. Sir Lancelot sees a knight on a horse. He notices it is Sir Carados and he has taken Gawine prisoner. Lancelot challenges the knight to a battle and the winner gets Gawine. Lancelot beats Sir Carados by having him thrown under his horse's feet and struck off his head. Lancelot goes to sleep with his cousin Sir Lionel. Lionel gets taken prisoner to Sir Tarquine's castle. He awakes and a women tells him she will help him in the morning. Then Morgan Le Fay comes in with her three sisters and tells him to pick one of them but he refuses. The damsel comes back and wants Lancelot to fight for her father, King Bagdemagus in a tournament. He agrees to if she will let him free. While he is sleeping a man sits on him and they don't know each other so they get into a fight. Lancelot does good at the tournament and then he wants to find his cousin. He finds a maiden and asks if she knows where his cousin might be. She tells him she will lead him to Sir Tarquine's castle. They both fight it out till death because Tarquine wont yield to Lancelot for killing his brother. Sir Lancelot wins the battle. The women he did the favor for told him he should get a mistress. Lancelot doesn't want the because he loves the Queen. He comes across a hawk in the trees and a lady asks him to help her get it down. He climbs up the tree and fins out it was a trick and the ladies husband wants to kill Sir Lancelot. Lancelot jumps out of the tree and kills the man. Lancelot sees a guy chasing a women trying to kill her. He goes to stop the whole thing and the knight kills his wife. Lancelot goes to kill the knight but he yields so Lancelot because of chivalry he must take him as a prisoner. Lancelot make all the captives kneel to Queen Guenever.
Chapters 9-12
Queen Guenever is surprised by all the knights saying they will serve her and they were captured by Sir Lancelot. Arthur thinks that Lancelot did this for him when really it was for the Queen. Then Sir Lancelot starts to ask about Orkneys and might for right. Arthur explains that everything is going wrong. Morgause is falling in love with any man because Lot is dead, people are making everything out to be a competition instead of fairness, and everything is crashing down. Arthur wishes he never made any of this happen. Lancelot talks to his uncle Dap because he is in love with Guenever but he is christian so he knows he can not do anyhting with her. Lancelot has low self esteem and his uncle thinks he should just go talk to the queen and see what she would like to do. Lancelot goes on another quest to King Pelles haunted castle. There is a village where the people ask Sir Lancelot to save a girl from boiling water because only the best knight can do it. He walks in and gives the girl his hand and the curse is undone and the girl is free. king Pelles thanks Lancelot for saving his daughter and asks him to stay; Lancelot starts to drink a lot of wine and talks with the butler. He tells the queen that he had dreams but he would give them all up for her and that he is acting selfish but he loves her. The queen gets so upset at Lancelot and doesn't believe his story about getting drunk and tricked. After the queen cries and soon they both start to kiss. Elaine wants to go on an expedition to take Lancelot from the queen because she loves him even though Lancelot doesn't love her. It talks about Guenever not really sensing what is happening to well and that she may be jealous of Lancelot and Elaine's bay. The king knew about his wife and Lancelot but he did not want to think about it so he hoped it wasn't happening. If he were to ask his wife he knew she would say yes because she can not lie. Jenny Quenever the queen, talks to Sir Lancelot about the baby coming and tells him maybe he should marry her because the two of them could never get married. Then she tells him not to make love to her until after Elaine is gone because he might find a way to love and marry her.

The queen has Elaine and Lancelot go to her room the next morning because when the queen sent for him he was not there. She called him a traitor and wouldn't believe Elaine tricked him. The third time he awakes he asks how he got there. Elaine tells him he was a mad man and he asks if many people saw him like this and he admits he has been acting like a fool. He tells Elaine he can not marry her because he does not love her but he will stay with her if it makes her happy. Lancelot does not want to prove he can do this he proves over and over he is the greatest kinght. The king commands him to help so he does. After everyone starts to cheer but Lancelot sits there crying.
Thoughts/Reflection
The first four chapters had to do a lot with Lancelot and him becomming a knight, then through the whole book he is liek the most important character adn everyoen depends on him. I think it would be hard to be him having everyone knowing how good you are suppose to be and having to live up to high expectations. I couldn't believe that Guenever and Lancelot fell on love. When Lancelot brought back all the knights for the Queen i don;t know why the king thought they might be for him or maybe he was just hoping. I don't like Elaine because she used and tricked Lancelot when he wanted to be loyal and stay a virgin. If i was Guenever I would have been wicked mad at Lancelot to ebcause she was in love with him and now he is having a baby with someone else. It isn't all his fault but he was the one who drank a lot, I was so susprised when Lancelot ran off and know saw him for two years. Then they start talking about a mad man and i could enver picture Lancelot being like that. I love the chapters where Arthur tells Lancelot that the round table was a bad idea because he used might to make it. It shows he can realize when he does stuff wrong and that he will do a lot of things to fix it. I thing goign on a quest was a good idea to look for the holy grail. I feel bad because Lancelot did not make it but he realizes why during his dreams. I think his dreams were srong and very helpful for him to figure out what he has done wrong. I think by Elaine killing herself was her only option unless she wants to be lonely, because her son is gone and never comming back and Lancelot doesn't love her. I think Lancelot was crying after he helped out because he doesn't wnat to be the hero who does everything , who fihgts and kills, he just wants to be a good person and realize the real miracles he always wanted to make happen.

The wedding happens and Arthur and Morgause with her four sons go as do a lot of other people. Merlyn tells Arthur the name of his mother. Then brings a Spancel to make Arthur love her. It works and they are half brother and sister, who end up having a son named Mordred.

Reflection
I think that Morgause has four sons who are all unique and have a strength and a weakness they share as a group of brothers. What I think is interesting is that the way Merlyn thinks of war because most people don't think about it so serious and how little stupid reasons make people fight and kill. I thought it was nice of Pellinore not to let his friends kill the poor questing beast and that it was interesting she moved on to Sir Palomides. I think that the spancel was very good idea for Morgause to get what she wants and i believe a lot of people would do the same thing.

The Once And Future King

Chatpers 1&2
Characters that are introduced are: Sir Ector, his son Kay, "Wart", and the king in the woods. Sir Ector in these chapters wants to look for a tutor for the boys. Then we learn that Kay doesn't get beaten or punished because of his status and Wart does. The two boys go hawking and the hawk flies into a tree. Kay gets mad and leaves while Wart stays true and tries to get the hawk back. While trying to get the hawk he follows it into the woods where he gets lost and meets King Pellinore.
Traits: Kay seems like the person who is stuck up and likes to show that he is better then wart and make him feel useless. Wart is a follower and he cares about other people and wants to do the right thing. Pellinore is worried about finding the beast and he uses a dog so he seems dedicated but a little out of his mind to me.

Chapters 3&4
Merlyn is the newest character introduced and his owl Archimedes. Wart falls asleep in the woods and when he wakes up he is hungry. He looks for food and finds a cottage with an older man living in it. He finds out that this man is Merlyn a magician. Merlyn invites him in for breakfast and shows him all of the things he has ( mice, worms, horns, tail) that a magician would. Then they eat and Wart talks to Archimedes the owl . Merlyn tells Wart that he will be his tutor and the set back for Sir Ector's castle. They get there and bring back Hod's Hawk and share the news that Merlyn the magician will tutor them. Sir Ector makes Merlyn prove himself so Merlyn makes it snow, shows testimonials, and makes a mulberry tree grow. Sir Ector decides Merlyn is good enough to be the boys tutor.
Chapters 5&6
The chapter starts by describing the castles defense system, ( having holes to pour hot liquid, where the people go when invaded, how the church always got destroyed) then it talked about having a boy to take care of the hounds in the castle and he would ( feed, clean, nurse, play) do everything to take care of all of them. Then Wart complains it is hot out and wishes he was a fish so Merlyn makes it happen and they both become fish. Merlyn shows him being a fish isn't east and take him to see the king of the moat fish. He is obsessed with power and talks about how having the biggest body and a strong mind will get u lots of power. Thus showing Wart that having to much power isn't a good thing and it ruins people. After this Merlyn falls asleep near a tree well the boys are practicing archery. They decide to go off and hunt for rabbits. Kay get the first rabbit they have ever killed. They release and arrow in the air and then a gore-crow takes off with the arrow and Kay tells Wart it was a witch.
Chapters 7&8
It is all about violence and how Wart wants to become a knight. Merlyn gets mad because he thinks that fighting messes up learning and that people who can fight consider themselves educated when they are not. Wart wants to see a real joust so King Pellinore and Sir Grummore fight. Neither of them win and they both end up hitting a tree. Merlyn tells Wart when they wake up they will be best of friends. So Wart learns that fighting doesn't solve anything and it doesn't really have a point. I also noticed and liked how the authors shows us examples from today so we understand what it was like back then. He uses that the horse would have to be able to hold heavy weight because of all the armor and he compares them to modern work horses today. Then he is bored on a rainy day so he goes to Merlyn and asks to be a hawk. Merlyn tells him that he is not ready to be a hawk then agrees to make him a merlin and let him go visit the birds for a night. There he is asked questions that he must think and try to guess the right answer. He gets about 90% right and must face a challenge of standing next to Cully for three rings before Cully eats him. He escapes safely and learns that even in a tough situation if you think hard and put your mind to it you can get out of that situation.
Chapters 9&10
Kay and Wart get into a fight because Kay is mad and jealous that Merlyn does stuff for Wart and not himself. Wart confronts Merlyn about the situation and Merlyn says that he can only do magic for Him and not Kay unless he uses his own magic. They go into the woods on an adventure where they meet Little John. He brings them to Robin Wood, who would like the boys to help him find Wat, the dog boy, and Tuck. He tells them they were captured by a fairy and they are in Morgan Le Faye's castle.
Chapters 11&12
Robin Wood and Marian explain to the boys that they are the only ones who can do the job and lead them towards the castle. They give them swords that are made from iron because Morgan Fay hates iron. They are told never let go of the sword and never eat anything while they are in the castle. The Queen frees the people and Wart breaks his collar bone. Kay shoots the griffin in the head and kills him. They all say goodbye and head there own ways. When the boys get back to Sir Ector's castle he is proud of them. Wart brought Wat along in hopes Merlyn could fix him. Merlyn does his best and Wat and the Dog Boy become good friends.
Chapters 13&14
Wart wants to get turned into an ant so Merlyn lets him. He realizes that ants don't do much besides work and they only speak done and not done. So he doesn't like being an ant. He learns that letting everyone else say what happens is wrong and everyone should think individually most of the time. Sir Ector receives a letter stating that a man named William Twyti and his hunting dogs are going to be hunting in Sir Ectors forest. Sir Ector is responsible for the cost, cleaning and salting what William catches, and letting him stay in his castle. He isn't happy about this and thinks of bad things that could happen like the beast in the woods eating William.
Chapters 15&16
It is winter time and there is a description of the snow being 3 inches and that winter lasts two months. Sir Ector holds a feast for the holidays and invites everyone. There people sing and make speeches and toasts. William Twyti goes hunting in the woods with King Pellinore and other people. King Pellinore finds the beast very ill and its so upset. He wants to bring him back to Sir Ector's castle and make his health better so he can hunt him.
Comments : what is up with tally - ho? I mean what would it be for words today?
Chapter 17&18
Archimedes, Merlyn, and Wart all talk about birds and their language because Wart wants to fly and be a bird again. Wart learns birds have laws about marriage and everything. Archimedes takes Wart out to fly after Wart eats a mouse and turns into an owl. He learns how to fly then Archimedes takes him over to see geese. He talks about death and the geese don't like it, Then a goose talks to him about the fact that they fly and have no boundaries. She basically says there is no point in fighting, that they share and humans think fighting is fun and cool when its not.
Chapter 19&20
Wart's friend lyo lyok the girl goose, teaches him about rules of food and all about what they are like. Then he flys wiht them and they all sing songs. They end up crossing the North Sea. Then Kay tells Wart he was snoring and making a honking noise when he wakes up. I think Wart realizes that geese stick together and when they want to do something they try there hardest and don't back down. Six years pass and Wart has been changed into many different things.
Chapter 21&22
Sir Ector thinks that Wart sulks because Kay is going to become a knight. Wart gets turned into a badger and meets a hedge hog. He calls him Urchin and realizes they both know Merlyn. Before he knew that the hog knew Merlyn he was thinking about eating him. He is sent to see Mr. Badger. The badger talks about embryos and his theory on how people were made through his essay. Then he says that man is the top of the animal class and they kill there own people. he thinks it's horrible and that man isn't that great and that other species are better. At the end he asks Wart if he liked the geese or the ants best because they are to very opposite creatures; one good, smart, and likes peace, the other is all about war, fighting, and not thinking beyond done and not done. The king gets killed. Sir Ector and King Pellinore think about the sword and the stone to decide who is the next king. Then the person who pulls it out is the only right person for England. Kay wants a chance at the sword and he talks to it with is father and sir Grummore. Merlyn leaves and this really upsets Wart. They try to get him to stay but he goes back to the forest.
Chapter 23&24
Kay goes to fight but doesn't have his sword so Wart goes to get it. He sees the sword in Anvil and goes for it, not knowing what it was he just thinks its a quick way to get Kay a sword. As he goes to pull it out he (gets advice) or it seems like he does telling him about how to get the sword. He receives the sword and gives it to Kay. Kay knows it isn't his sword and asks Wart about it. Then Sir Ector hears abotu it and goes back to the churc. Kay told him that he got the sword but then says no Wart really got it. They don't believe him so he puts the sword back in the stone and pulls it out for the second time. Then they realize this is their new king and honor him. Wart breaks down crying. The coronation occurs and Wart receives a lot of presents. Merlyn comes back and explains to Wart that he knew all along about him becoming king and that he carried him to Sir Ector when he was a baby. Wart is now known as King Arthur.

Comments/thoughts
I believe my favorite character is Merlyn. I like him because he seems wise and he helps Arthur as much as he can. I think it was interesting that Merlyn was able to teach him so much by (Wart) Arthur being transformed into other animals. Kay is uptight and likes to rub how special he is in peoples face. I don't like him very much. Arthur is smart but still has some learning to do and now he has to take on ruling as a king. I feel bad for him but I believe he wild o a good job. My favorite lesson or transformation was when he turned into a goose. He learned valuable information and it showed that some species are so kind and gentle then there are species like us humans who are violent, greedy, and mean. I think Arthur cries when he gets the sword because all he wanted to do was get Kay a sword because he admired him and the knights. All of a sudden he is in charge of being king when he has always been nothing so he isn't prepared for it. I don't blame him because it is such a responsibility that he didn't ask for. To me this book so far is really interesting and keeps me reading !! I can't wait to read more.

Le Morte d'Arthur

pages 575-585
Vocabulary- there were no words that i didn't really understand i just thought it was neat how they gave a definition for legend, epic, medieval romance , and chivalry.
Summary - Merlin gives Arthur to foster parents to keep hid identity hidden until it is his time be king. Then Merlin dies and Britain is fought for by Barons. Then there is a competition to see who can pull the sword out of the stone and the one person who does is the only one to be king. Arthur pulls out the sword and everyone kneels to him and asks for his forgiveness and are happy for him to be their king.
Thoughts- I think that Arthur will be a king who always tries to make the best decision for Britain and always look out for everyone. I think he will do everything in his power to make all the people of Britain happy.
Pages 587-598
Vocabulary- lecherous was a word i didn't know. I figured out it has to do with lust.
Summary- Sir launcelot wants too look for adventure and falls asleep under a tree. Sir Ector end up at Tarquine's castle, where he is beaten. Then Sir Launcelot helps Bagdemagus by fighting for him. Launcelot frees the prisoners in Tarquine's castle and tells them to take what they want because he killed Tarquine. Launcelot defeats two giants in king Arthur's court and he became the most famous Knight.
Thoughts- I think that the code of chivalry is good and since it states they act if it is for a women, Launcelot helps her by killing the guy that rapes her and to me that's not ideal because even though it is a nice thing to do I believe lots of people would stick up for someone being raped not just perfectionists.
Characters-
Sir Launcelot seems like an epic hero character he is strong and he looks for adventure, helps people solve their problems.
Tarquine he reminded me of Sir Launcelot because he was good at fighting. I didn't like how he kept prisoners and treated him bad and he deserved to die.
Pages 599-604
Vocabulary- I didn't know the words assail and vouchsafed. I looked them up and found out they meant to assault and to give or grant.
Summary- Sir Modred sent a fake letter saying King Arthur was dead and then asked the queen to marry him. Arthur got word of this and he wanted to get revenge. Sir Gawin sends a letter to Sir launcelot asking him to take armies and fight against Sir Modred. King Arthur and Sir Modred fought in a battle with no more then 14 men and Sir Modred's sword went through Arthur's helmet and killed him. Sir Bedivere was to take the sword and throw it in the water. He saw a hand grab the sword wave it three times and disappear.
Connections- King Arthur talks about how Sir Gawain warned him he would die and i connected that to the Iliad when Achilles knew that if he killed hector that he would die soon after.
